Hospice Suites at Silverstone

Sunshine Coast Hospice works in partnership with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) to support the four hospice rooms and Family Lounge at Silverstone Care Centre in Sechelt.

To be eligible for a referral to a hospice room, you must be registered in the VCH palliative care program. You can learn more by asking your family doctor or the VCH Sechelt Home Care office at (604) 741-0726. Once registered, you can request a referral to a Hospice room.

Hospice volunteers and staff are available to provide compassionate support for residents admitted to Hospice care and their families. Contact Coast Hospice for more information at 604-740-0475.

Nov.30, 2023 - Update about the closure of Shorncliffe
from Tess Huntly, Executive Director of Coast Hospice

As you may be aware, Shorncliffe Intermediate Care Home will be closing in the coming months, and Silverstone Long Term Care Home will open in early 2024. The hospice suites will be moved on an interim basis to Silverstone, under the responsibility of the Trellis corporation. The Vancouver Coastal Health palliative team will continue to be responsible for making referrals to these suites.

The Sunshine Coast Hospice Society has long advocated for a significant increase in the number of hospice residential suites to address the immediate and long-term needs of our population on the Sunshine Coast. We are happy to see the number of suites increase from two at Shorncliffe to four at the interim hospice location at Silverstone.

Coast Hospice continues to work with VCH towards building a permanent residential hospice that will be a place where families can be comfortable and near their loved ones. Our Society's vision is for a community facility that will offer at least eight suites, providing a combination of hospice care, palliative respite, and short-term stays for symptom management, in a home-like, safe setting.

Coast Hospice will continue to provide support and companionship to people with life-limiting diagnoses wherever they reside, in hospice suites, at home, in hospital or in long-term care.

Of course, all our programs and services offered at Hospice House in Davis Bay, and in the community, will continue. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to ask for more information about these services.

Questions about the closure of Shorncliffe and the opening of Silverstone, should be directed to:
Marie Duperreault, Director, Sunshine Coast Region, VCH

Your support of Coast Hospice is valued, and we look forward to working with our community to create a long-term centre for hospice care. For more information, please contact me.

Sincerely,

Tess Huntly, Executive Director, Sunshine Coast Hospice Society

What is Hospice care?

Hospice is a special type of care, so it is not tied to a place. It can be offered at home, in a care facility or hospital, or in a separate hospice suite. It primarily focuses on comfort and dignity of a person with a serious illness who is approaching death. It especially seeks to honour the patient’s values and wishes for end-of-life care, and how they envision their passing.

Your wishes for care

You can discuss your wishes for end-of-life care in advance with your loved ones and family doctor through the development of a Green Sleeve Advance Care Plan, a community program offered through Sunshine Coast Hospice.

Watch Living with Dying: Circle of Support

I consider the three months I spent at Shorncliffe Hospice before my husband passed away to be a blessing I could not have imagined. The staff were extremely good, and they really liked my husband and gave him so much attention.
