Dr. Rainer Borkenhagen

Director

Rainer is a retired family physician, having practiced mainly in Vancouver and subsequently as a rural locum doctor servicing a number of remote communities in BC and the arctic.  As such, he’s had clinical experiences ranging from acute care and trauma, to hospitalist work, rehabilitation, extended care and palliative care, as well as a number of hospital administrative posts along the way.

Hospice  care has always been a unique experience for Rainer, especially when he has literally worked in newborn delivery, to comfort care at a patient’s end-of-life.  His mother at age 99 was able to access medical assistance in dying (MAiD), for which he is very grateful.  As a former engineer and having sat on committees for hospital building renewal, he believes strongly in the mission and vision of the Sunshine Coast Hospice and felt he could make a contribution to its betterment when joining the Board in 2019.
